This type of alligator spends most of its life in or near the water, and when it feels threatened on land it quickly slips back into the water. It sometimes uses its strong, heavy tail to hit its enemies.
The females lay 30 to 50 eggs at a time in nests made of leaves and mud. They are always alert and never leave their nest unprotected.
